Addressing racial inequality and its effects on vaccination rate: A trial comparing a pharmacist and peer educational program (MOTIVATE) in diverse older adults
CONCLUSIONS: Both interventions significantly improved knowledge and trust toward vaccination and retained their effect 1 month after the program. The 2 effective community-based education models should be expanded to ensure timely and trusted information is available to educate older adults about vaccine-preventable diseases. Further research is encouraged to assess the long-term cost-effectiveness of these models' utilization on a larger scale. DISCLOSURES: Dr Schafer is an employee of Merck; however, at the time of the project, he was a professor at Thomas Jefferson University. The other authors have no conflicts of int...

A study on knowledge, attitude, and vaccination behavior of herpes zoster vaccine among urban residents in selected areas of China
Conclusion: Low knowledge of herpes zoster and its vaccine, positive attitudes towards the preventive effects of herpes zoster and its vaccine, and extremely low vaccination rates among the urban population in China call for multiple measures to strengthen health education and vaccination recommendations for residents, especially for the elderly, low-education and low-income populations.PMID:37380410 | DOI:10.3760/cma.j.cn112338-20221125-00998

Influenza, Pneumococcal and Herpes Zoster Vaccination Rates in Patients with Autoimmune Inflammatory Rheumatic Diseases
CONCLUSIONS: The frequencies of vaccinations against influenza, Streptococcus pneumoniae and HZ have increased during recent years. While this can be partly explained by continuous efforts in patient education during the outpatient visits, the COVID-19 pandemic might also have contributed. Nevertheless, the persistently high incidence and mortality of these preventable diseases in patients with AIIRDs mandates further efforts to increase vaccination coverage, particularly in SLE patients.PMID:37112672 | PMC:PMC10146832 | DOI:10.3390/vaccines11040760

Willingness to Vaccinate Against Herpes Zoster and Its Associated Factors Across WHO Regions: Global Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Only 1 in 2 individuals showed a willingness to be vaccinated against HZ. The willingness rate was the highest in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Our findings show the critical role HCWs play in promoting HZ vaccination. Monitoring HZ vaccination willingness is necessary to inform public health decision-making. These findings provide critical insights for designing future life-course immunization programs.PMID:36892937 | DOI:10.2196/43893

Fight Aging! Newsletter, February 13th 2023
This study investigated whether taller Polish adults live longer than their shorter counterparts. Data on declared height were available from 848,860 individuals who died in the years 2004-2008 in Poland. To allow for the cohort effect, the Z-values were generated. Separately for both sexes, Pearson's r coefficients of correlation were calculated. Subsequently, one way ANOVA was performed. The correlation between adult height and longevity was negative and statistically significant in both men and women. After eliminating the effects of secular trends in height, the correlation was very weak (r = -0.0044 in men and ...

Disseminated varicella zoster virus infection following live attenuated herpes zoster vaccine: descriptive analysis of reports to Australia's spontaneous vaccine pharmacovigilance system, 2016-2020
CONCLUSIONS: Disseminated VZV is potentially life-threatening and occurs mostly in those with severe immunocompromise. Inadvertent administration of ZVL to immunocompromised individuals has occurred despite initial provider guidance and education. Multiple additional strategies to assist providers to identify contraindications have been implemented to prevent adverse outcomes.PMID:36707120 | DOI:10.1136/bmjopen-2022-067287

A review of factors influencing vaccination policies and programs for older adults globally
Hum Vaccin Immunother. 2023 Jan 19:2157164. doi: 10.1080/21645515.2022.2157164. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPolicies and programs to increase vaccine coverage rates among adults 50 years of age or older are limited and vaccine uptake is often suboptimal. Our review evaluated evidence on the effectiveness and success of adult-targeted vaccination interventions and identified literature gaps. Literature was retrieved (2021) from PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar databases. Outcomes assessed included data on an intervention's effectiveness and impact on vaccine uptake. Interventions were characterized thematically: afforda...

Willingness to accept herpes zoster vaccines and the influencing factors in China
CONCLUSIONS: The willingness to get shingles vaccines can be improved further. Professional education and credible recommendation might prompt the elderly to improve their willingness and reassure them of the safety and efficacy of the vaccine. Also, accessibility and affordability should also be improved in the future.PMID:36435780 | DOI:10.1186/s12879-022-07840-2

Association of asthma and herpes zoster, the role of vaccination: A literature review
Immun Inflamm Dis. 2022 Nov;10(11):e718. doi: 10.1002/iid3.718.ABSTRACTHerpes Zoster (HZ) is the reactivation of a previous infection with varicella-zoster virus (VZV) which shares the same mode of transmission as HZ. It presents with painful erythematous vesicles in a dermatome which is characterized by a burning sensation before and after the rash. Any conditions with suppressed cellular immunity example diabetes mellitus, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, cardiovascular diseases, chronic steroid uses, malignancy, etc. causes reactivation of the virus. Impaired immune responses in asthma patients either in a...

General practitioner knowledge gaps regarding live attenuated zoster vaccination of immunocompromised individuals: An ongoing concern?
DISCUSSION: While most GPs surveyed had good knowledge, notable gaps were identified. Further efforts are needed to promote awareness of recommendations, particularly for immunocompromised individuals. The availability of Shingrix, a non-live recombinant subunit zoster vaccine, in the private market provides an alternative, especially for immuncompromised patients.PMID:35773163 | DOI:10.31128/AJGP-09-21-6175

Primary Varicella or Herpes Zoster? An Educational Case Report From the Primary Care Clinic
This article focuses on the educational discussion of the primary differential diagnosis, evaluation for possible complications, and management of this uncommon clinical scenario. We also reinforce the importance of immunization in preventing re-emergent diseases as a critical element within primary care management.PMID:35509746 | PMC:PMC9057244 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.23732
